The gospel was proclaimed in Slough on July 7th by Pastors John Sherwood and Peter Simpson and Mr Graham Parkhouse, aided by stalwart sister, Mrs. Eve Hammond.
The preaching at one stage focused on the absolute importance of the blood of Christ and the following verses were referred to : “Without shedding of blood is no remission (of sin)” (Hebrews 9:22), and “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls” (Leviticus 17:11). There is no other means of forgiveness and cleansing except through the blood of Christ. No religious duties and no good works can cause the guilt of sin to be taken away, because God has ordained that reconciliation with Him can only be accomplished through the shedding and application of the blood of His Son.
There appeared to be a greater openness to the taking of tracts on this occasion, and it was encouraging to see a Muslim woman listening intently at one point, as Pastor Sherwood was preaching.
A whole Bible was handed to a West African man, who was expressing interest in taking a copy. He asked, How much is this? He was told it is extremely precious and valuable, but that he could also take it away for free!
Mr Parkhouse challenged a Polish teenager about the falsehood of evolutionary theory, which he strongly believed in, and he was handed a special tract on this subject from a Biblical perspective which Mr Parkhouse himself has written. The tract includes the following :
“Science is based on observation, but nobody was around to observe evolution if it happened millions of years ago, and any evidence of evolution happening now is limited to creatures adapting to changes in their environment, which is no evidence for how life got here in the first place”.
As Pastor Simpson was preaching about the necessity of the new birth to remove the corrupted heart which controls all without Christ, a young woman gleefully shouted out that she had the Devil in her heart, and that she was more than happy with this state of affairs. In this mocking statement she almost certainly did not realise how close to the truth she was, because the Bible tells us of Satan, “The god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” (2 Corinthians 4:4).
The same young woman also angrily shouted out. “If there is a God, why did He not stop the coronavirus?” Pastor Simpson responded that sickness has always been with man since Adam rebelled against God in the Garden of Eden. He then went on to explain how the pandemic is God calling out to the nation that it should humble itself before Him. Just as the Lord Jesus Christ healed the sick during His earthly ministry, so He can remove the coronavirus today, but why should He thus bless those who refuse to repent and seek His face?
May many who heard in Slough upon this day be moved to consider God’s providential actions in the world such as the virus, and be humbled, and so come in repentance and faith to the only Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.
