The COVID-19 PANDEMIC must not be approached as if medical precautions and scientific research are the only possible solutions, yet that is exactly what has happened. The plain fact is that Britain is putting all its trust in science and in the public health experts. Of course, they have a vital role, but as a nation we are leaving God out of the picture, and are resorting instead to a trust in human ingenuity. In place of crying out, ‘Lord, have mercy upon us’, we are proclaiming, ‘We shall beat this virus by stopping normal living, until we find a vaccine’.
What our secularised society fails to understand is that the coronavirus has come upon us in God’s providence. Ever since man’s first rebellion against God in the Garden of Eden all subsequent generations have lived in a fallen world which is no longer a paradise. This fallen condition includes sickness and disease. We of course provide every care for the sick and suffering, but we must also look beyond the mere physical to the wider issue of man’s rebellion against his Maker.
This pandemic, therefore, must be approached, not just as a medical and scientific matter, but as a spiritual issue also. Yes, we must take reasonable and necessary precautions to contain the virus, but we must not make the precautions our only trust. The possibility of finding a vaccine does not mean that we can forget our dependence on the Creator God. To do so is to idolise science.
Attempts to deal with the pandemic, such as lockdowns, are leading to grave economic problems for the nation. Economic collapse is also an aspect of God’s providence, and is a sign of the withdrawal of His blessing from a people who no longer honour Him.
How we must therefore seek the Lord Jesus Christ, He who has been the mighty Deliverer of our country in times past, and He who has power over all disease, as He proved when He walked upon this earth.
How we need to humble ourselves at a time like this, for we are a nation which for many decades now has failed to honour God, thinking that in our fashionable progressiveness we can abandon the teachings of the Bible. Legislation has been introduced, for example, which is in outright, fist-shaking defiance of God’s word.
The most deadly virus which afflicts this world is the virus of sin. Unlike Covid-19, sin has a 100% mortality rate, being fatal for all age groups and health conditions. The Bible tells us that every single human being has broken God’s commandments and is guilty in His sight. Our nation, and that means each individual within it, therefore needs to come in repentance and faith to the Lord Jesus Christ, the only Saviour of sinners.
“There is none righteous, no, not one … for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:10, 23)
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31)
